It just has to be done correctly. Over the top foreshadowing of a big but obvious surprise of any sort is bad but knowing someone is going to turn and looking for what will turn them can make for an interesting story. I liked that in the early Smallvilles. You know Lex is going to turn and you can see the events that lead up to it taking place. What I liked about is you even some chances Clark had to stop but failed because of a lack of trust.
How poorly the transformation of Anikin was done the biggest disappointment of the entire series. It should have been more like the end of Return of the Jedi but with a different outcome. Making him so unlikable to start with is what made the transformation so bad. If they had made Obie Wan’s character Anikin and then had him turn because of blinding rage at the loss of Padme it would have been a much more emotional impact, not to mention a much better actor.
A well told story is a well told story regardless of any alliance changes.
