Any sort of villain can work in the proper context, and with the proper author writing it.
Generally, however, I prefer villains that have more motivation and character than being pure evil and believing that destroying the world is a good idea.
Most of all I like when it's difficult to tell which characters are "villains" and which are "heroes". But that falls outside of your question, lol.
