Wheel of Time of course because it brought me here. But before that...

the books that made me fall in love with fantasy were the "The Deeds of Paksenarion". I picked one of them up in a moment of desperate boredom and got hooked within the first two pages. My husband found me reading the book and told me it was the second in the series and went out the garage to get the first book for me to read before I read the one I was reading. he had tried for 17 years to get me to read fantasy and sci-fi with no luck. He was quite excited that I was finally getting started. Then he carefully picked out the best books to finish hooking and reeling me in.
The cool thing about the Paksenarion books was that when I finished reading them I wrote a letter to Elizabeth Moon to tell her how much I had enjoyed the books and asked a few questions about her and the books. She wrote back a three page letter. What a great lady!

There is certainly a strong sense of 'spirtualism' in Simmons' characterizations...
