Yes, it's very fun to be political with your writings, but it's not anything particularly new. He's just the darling of the spec fic crowd because he's political and New Weird. If there's another reason, I don't see it; his prose is good, but definitely not exceptional, and his plots are nothing compared to Book of the New Sun, at least.
By the way, I'm not sure I ever actually thanked you for getting me to read Book of the New Sun (to be honest, like all other of my favorite reads it's mostly due to WoTmania's Quote of the Moment, but you were the second biggest influence
