I was trying to convince at least some people that a non sci-fi/fantasy pick for the Book Club is a good idea.

Some of the language in your post comes off as unnecessarily denigrating to the sci-fic/fantasy genre, which is what people here love, after all. Most of us are also open to classics, but we'd rather hear why they're important than why so little spec fic can ever measure up. (I say "us" as a gesture of solidarity mostly... I've read maybe one spec fic book this year, compared with dozens from the literary/non-fiction genres.:P)
