I am inviting responses from people who want to read good fiction, regardless of genre.

With respect to the Iliad, Odyssey and the Aeneid (and, really, also with respect to The Divine Comedy) you have to read the works in the original to get the full value of the poetry. The poetry's the thing. I'm sure you're aware of that. Hadn't you read the Aeneid in Latin?

When I read them in class, it was in the original, of course, but equally obviously, we didn't have the time in class to read even as much as 10% of those works, just a few hundred lines of each, spread out over a number of passages. Probably less than 5%.
