Tolkien's writings for children are extremely enjoyable. My brother once got a book of Letters from Father Christmas, which Tolkien wrote and illustrated. There was still more proof of a special brain at work there. I really enjoyed them though, and I think most children would. Child-brains have this wonderful capacity to gloss over oddities and impossibilities and simply appreciate the story as a whole.

Yes, I remember the Letters from Father Christmas. They were amusing. I read them in Norwegian, though; and I suspect something may have gone lost in translation.
