Edit: I get that he needed a way to get in good with the townspeople near the Chandrian-attacked farm, but that dragon/sweeteater part of the novel sits like a weird blob I must poke with a stick. Accidentally running into Denna out there, having her eat something disgusting sounding and clearly Not Food, finding a druggie dragon and then having to save a town from it really doesn't feel like it fits into the story for me. He did have several other unexpected occurrences through the course of the novel, but this doesn't work well w/o some major disbelief-suspension, imo.
The whole "Dragon" story tangent serves no real purpose in the story. The story was starting to drag, and while "Real life isn't like a story" we have a fight with a drugged out "dragon", a rescue, a burning town. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the narrative, not in style, pacing, or purpose.

I remember reading a blog post of his or something similar where he stated that this bit was added in much later in the writing process. I got the impression that it was one of the last things written. Also, that he thought it was a necessary part of the book and that he was quite happy with it.
I'm going to say that if I'm remembering correctly- he was wrong. It's a really awkward section.
November Book Club is now open! The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss.

It's almost as if the author decided there needed to be a little adventure to move the story along.

I did forget to mention the really horrible pun-type thing I thought of after his last scene.

The book has been compared with Harry Potter. Do you think this is fair? Why/why not? *NM*

I really couldn't say whether it was fair. Seems a weird judgement to me.
