Are we supposed to view Kvothe as an unreliable narrator?
I do not believe so, no, unless I'm misunderstanding you on "unreliable?" Do you mean that he is not relating the stories as they might have happened? Or downplaying his heroics? Because if so, no, I don't agree with that. He made too big of a deal of talking about his people and honor/honesty etc. If anything, a showman should make the story bigger.
Yes, I meant is he changing the facts in some way, whether making them bigger or smaller. Ie can we trust that he is telling the truth?
I get the feeling that we can, but it's only Book 1.
Or is the framed narrative a way of showing how word-of-mouth distorts the truth and turns ordinary people into heroes?
This was the sense I got. Especially when Old Cobb(?) was trying to relate his version of the truth at the Inn.

How did you feel about the structure? Was it annoying? Did it work for you?
I liked it. It was a little different and that was intriguing. For some reason though, I would get a bit of a jar when he dropped out of history and Bast/Chronicler entered. I think maybe I don't like the way he writes third person. Not sure if that's it though.
I think his 3rd person chapters are comparatively weak, so maybe it is that. I hated the opening chapter or two, and wasn't really interested in the book until Chronicler showed up.

It's almost as if the author decided there needed to be a little adventure to move the story along.

I really couldn't say whether it was fair. Seems a weird judgement to me.
