Dune is a series I've grown up with in terms of having first read it at a relatively young age and then many many times since then. I've raced through some and plodded through others and only recently been able to find copies of the last two books which were written by Kevin Anderson and Brian Herbert.
The final installments were fantastic imo but then I've always been fascinated by the Dune books. Along with the last couple of books in the mainline series I also managed to pick up the 3 books comprising the Prelude to Dune (Atreides, Harkonnen and Corrino) and I have to say they have made some fantastic reading.
Characters who I only learnt tidbits about in the mainline story come out in full technicolour in this in depth look at some of the recent history surrounding the three Great Families at the heart of the climatic events that occur. Motives are formed and lines drawn, allies made and enemies created.
Having almost finished reading House Corrino I was hoping to get other peoples opinions on the books. The characters, the story, the universal empire that is encompassed within the pages.
Personally I feel that Brian and Kevin have done a brilliant job carrying on the legacy of Frank Herbert but if you disagree lets talk about that too.
I've also read the book that covers the period of time between Dune and Dune Messiah (though the title currently eludes me) as well as the first book in the Legends of Dune collection (The Butlerian Jihad) but until I've finished that line I don't really have much to say except that I loved the first book.
Anyway, hopefully someone atleast will manage to get to this end part here and decide to participate in a little discussion about the books and authors.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Cheers
