I don't really know as I would "encourage" them to read certain books, unless they actually asked me for recommendations. I'd much rather them develop their own tastes.
I think I'd encourage it by the giving of presents. They can decide whether or not they're going to read their presents, I suppose.
The Illustrated Book of Myths is another fantastic book that continues to help me to this day. I'll give them my copy.
