This is a book that I have had for several years. I picked it up at a Goodwill or got it from a family member. I don't remember which.
I have always been a Scifi fan and this was one of the first non-Star Trek scifi books that I read as a kid. This is the first book of a trilogy written by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch and is a very exciting start to the series. After reading the first book I looked and looked but couldn't find the second and third books. I finally found them about a year ago a started a reread. I'm woring my way back through the trilogy once again.
Basically an archaeologist discovers strange "soot layers" buried at various depths across the entire globe. The "soot" is laid down every 2,006 years. He enlists a school friend of his and another archaeologist and together they research the "soot." The last time it occurred was 2,006 years ago. He links that to a lost satellite near Uranus. After convincing the world's scientists of the possible global threat they try to figure out how to keep the planet safe this time around. They soon find out that there isn't a chance in hell of keeping the planet completely safe.
(Like I said this is my first review. What do you think? Be gentle.)

Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everybody’s human.
Spock: I find that remark…insulting.
