Elizabeth Boyer - because it's very cool to see a fantasy culture with a different basis from the usual early European/medieval. Hers is based on Norse mythology.

Pretty close to anything by Lawrence Watt Evans. In particular "With a Single Spell" and "The Misenchanted Sword". They are awesome, yet somehow light at the same time.

For SF, investigate James P. Hogan. Particular 'Thrice Upon a Time' and 'Inherit the Stars'.

How's that for a start?
