If you are buying a hardback you are already sacrificing on portability and price compared to a paperback anyway, so the main advantages of an e-book will not be the crucial issues in making a purchase decision.

However if you are just buying a paperback to read on public transport or the beach I can understand how an e-reader would look like a very good idea.

Were I think they would be of most use is in relation to academic books. If all academic books were also released as e-books I would buy an e-reader tomorrow.

From what I understand this is a major issue holding back the readers right now. The pictures/graphics involved in an academic book are typically so plentiful and complex that they can't be formatted correctly. I think that Research and Development has to be hard at work at this problem because like you and many others I would love to have digital copies of my textbooks and serious non-fiction.
