Like you say, Erasmas doesn't understand the implication any more than we do, but I miss more questions from him on that point. He had lots of people he could ask but all he did was go on happily with his life. Bit disappointing really.
I think that he also realized, and was strongly encouraged, to leave the questions and answers well alone. Stephenson used that as a device not to have to truly delve into the implications of manipulated metaphysics on a 'real' setting.
