Always the truth. People aren't that fragile. They would rather know the truth.

It saves you and them time.
On the other hand, I will sometimes at least give the book a shot even if I am convinced beforehand that it isn't my cup of tea. And I have been blindsided by a several that I have ended up really liking.
But if it really gets to a point where I can't take it, I will give up rather than torture myself.
An good story for telling the truth in these matters was one where a man lied and told his mother-in-law that he loved her tuna casserole when he actually hated it and could barely gag it down. After that she made it a point to always make it for him and wait to watch his enjoyment as he ate it. When she finally did find out how he really felt about it, she felt humiliated and betrayed. When I heard that story, I could easily put myself in her place and imagine how that would feel. Since then, I have really made the effort to be up front when I didn't like something. I always remind myself how much more hurt they would be when they found out I didn't really like what they were doing or giving.

Well, there are a couple of options. First, you could kill the friend.
