The majority of that truly large book is very good from its characters, world creation, plotting, and especially how metaphysics and philosophy prop up a surprisingly interesting and entertaining story.
The ending seemed rushed to me too. I understand what I read, but you're right in that the real impact of those actions don't seem clear. It is fair to say that the PoV, Erasmus, doesn't understand the exact implications either.
All in all a great book that falls a bit short of what it could be because of either a rushed or uncertain ending.

Looking back, I can't remember reading it. I one hundred percent see it in my head as a movie.
