If you are buying a hardback you are already sacrificing on portability and price compared to a paperback anyway, so the main advantages of an e-book will not be the crucial issues in making a purchase decision.
However if you are just buying a paperback to read on public transport or the beach I can understand how an e-reader would look like a very good idea.
Were I think they would be of most use is in relation to academic books. If all academic books were also released as e-books I would buy an e-reader tomorrow.
