I thought it perfectly clear. Vodalus Send a noteboard - 04/10/2009 06:04:46 AM
At least twice events take place that seem to be hooks into further plot developments (Quentin discovers a new form of magic shooting out of his fingers and later has a problem with a childhood friend who discovers the real nature of his school) but in both cases they are simply dropped and never referred to again, making their original inclusion apparently pointless. Very strange.quote>

That childhood girlfriend shows up at the end of the book with Quentin's two former Brakebills schoolmates. An interesting developement that! ;)

The woman described appearing at the last moment with his two schoolmates I assumed was the woman who was his coworker. This was logical: she knew the other students and he'd just spent a chapter talking her into having a more positive outlook on life and doing something more interesting. The physical description of the two women is also similar. His ex-girlfriend had no idea who those other students were and without going to Brakebills it seemed impossible for her to find his classmates or know who they were, and he had never mentioned her to his classmates either.

The fact that I got confused on that point reinforces to me that Grossman did not write that point clearly, which is the same criticism that I was levelling at him in the first place.

Based on Q's conversation with Emily, it was in no way logical. That it was Julia, however, made perfect sense. And was actually kind of nice little highlight for the dénouement.
