Also reading a Russian fiction book written by an emigre in 1981, and need to get back to a few things I set aside.
I am taking up two reading challenges this year: (1) 50 book challenge and (2) not to buy any new books (other than the ones I preordered last year, of course ). If I continue the second challenge I still won't run out of books to read for at least 15 years.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

I would start with Mansfield Park as it's the most boring.

Seconded. Every likeable character in Mansfield Park is, apparently, considered a villain.

It wasn't exactly a major plot point or anything. But it was ugly.

Merill? Merith? Something like that?

Merel, yes. Kind of odd to see a Dutch name popping up in a Norse setting, but okay.
