Because your description makes it sound like he strolls through the story with a clean conscience while everyone around him is revealed to be the "real" a-holes.

He feels remorse for taking advantage of her and besmirching her by association with his accursed bloodline(because white trash from rural Texas are VERY conscious of bloodlines, I guess? ), until she starts voluntarily sleeping with him. Then he reverts to cool, cocky & patronizing. The entire book seems very unaware of the fact that he RAPED HER. And there is zero indication that his new family understand exactly what down at his stable job. He didn't molest any of the teenagers, so he's pure as the driven snow as far as literally everyone is concerned, because there is no middle ground between 'molests children' and acceptably roguish.

That would make my head explode, so I don't know how you managed

I'm a Neanderthal, I guess. He didn't rape any of MY female chattelskinfolk, so I can forgive him. spits, grunts, adjusts balls

Seriously though, the book is so surreally unrealistic it kind of anesthetizes you to the more appalling aspects. For instance, I referenced the blackmail info they never use against the Senator. It turns out he's got a serious alcoholism problem, involving numerous hushed-up DWIs including an accident that badly scarred the face of his female passenger (in Judith McNaught Universe, he might as well have slit her throat, and in fact, someone probably should, because she's never going to find a handsome billionaire now). Nobody bothers to deal with the fact that this individual is still a US Senator, with a penchant for using his office to settle family grudges, and a presumed bright future that possibly includes the White House, according to Cole's own bought-and-paid-for Senator. Or wonder how a former college athlete househusband with no apparent job was able to obtain the official documentation of these incidents when the Texas Democratic Party has not.
