The level of cultural detail she gives is quite interesting. You certainly learn how voting in the republic worked, among other things. She's not always entirely accurate but it makes for a decent read with some real factual meat to the story.

And also agreed with Paul up there. The Marius/Sulla parts of the series are the best.
