And this sums up your biggest problem! You are not in a college classroom anymore. Enjoy the story and relax.
And I enjoy stories more when I "hear" the melodies of the prose and see the well-crafted structure of it. But then again, I also like "rawer" texts on occasion. If anything, appreciating those elements seems like it would add to enjoyment, not detract from it.
Then again, le mot juste can enliven any prose. If Tolkien, for example, hadn't at least worked at developing memorable writing, his created-world fictions would have lacked the vividness of his source material, Anglo-Saxon epics and poetry.
But different strokes for different folks, I suppose...
