I'm stunned to see that there hasn't been a review (or even discussion thread) for this book yet. Am I making things up, or was Republic of Thieves not a highly anticipated book?
For my part, I really enjoyed it. While it doesn't feature the fast-paced action of The Lies of Locke Lamora or Red Seas Under Red Skies, I found that the humor was excellent and the political intrigue fun...but what really drove this book was Sabetha. Unwrapping the layers of her relationship with Locke was a great deal of fun, in both timelines, and made for some good tension throughout the book.
Any thoughts?
I enjoy Lynch's writing style; the dialogue between characters is great, and I like how Locke and Jean argue like an old married couple.
I haven't got to the adult Sabetha yet, but, like Legolas said previously, she had better be awesome after all that build up. I also hope that the ending isn't rushed as it was in the previous two books, although the end Red Seas was much better than his first book.
I have to admit that three books in, I am getting a little annoyed with the flashbacks to childhood; I like the stories and info but am tired of the breaks in the present story. It just doesn't work as well for me this time around. Particularly as we had moved on from '"father Chains era" flashbacks in Red Seas. Perhaps ill chai get my mind when I finally meet Sabetha.
Glad you posted- I've been waiting for someone else to do it
