Would you recommend to read Under Heaven first (in order to feel the themes you mentioned more), or do you think it's enough enjoyment as stand alone?

You can really do either. You might get 5% more out of it by reading UNDER HEAVEN first, but they are somewhat different books (UH has a bit more magic, RoS has a bit more military action). However, alongside THE LIONS OF AL-RASSAN, they're probably Kay's best books to date so you can't really go wrong.
