Interesting. I'm considering if this would be a good birthday gift for my Québécois mother-in-law.

If she's a bit the scholarly type, or likes medieval stories and culture, and have an interest in languages, it could be a winner (but she might have read it, then). It' a fairly charming work, and one of the most accessible of the medieval texts.

Otherwise, I wouldn't want to mislead you it would be of special interest to the average Québécois, or culturally much relevant to us, nor that it's very readable or fun to read in the text to an average reader without some background or interest in old languages. It's more than merely archaic, it's another language. It's not an especially hard one, and Tom has all the right experiences behind him to find it much more accessible than it is for the average French reader (especially those with no knowledge at all of Latin), and my answer to him kept all that in mind.

If you think the subject matter would especially interest her but not the plowing through Old French, bilingual editions are easy to find.
