Billy Lynn's Long Half Time Walk by Ben Fountain. Just this amazing book about a Private in the US Army who's on leave for a couple of weeks because his ... group (brain has forgotten the military term) did something pretty heroic and difficult. They're whisked around the country, appearing on TV &c. The book is just one day of this, when the guys go to a football match, and it's this incredible piece of writing exploring the kid's feelings and people's reactions to him.
The other book is completely different. It's The Haunted Book by Jeremy Dyson, published by my favourite independent house, Canongate. It starts off as a collection of hauntings around the UK and turns into something else entirely. I was kind of gobsmacked when I finished it, and grinned for a bit. Don't recall ever having had that reaction before.

After AMOL, I'm looking for something new, so let me ask - What was the best book you read in 2012?

It's a great book, though Chronicles of Amber would seem closer to WoT
