I have Thomas Bartlett's general history of Ireland (haven't gotten around to reading it yet). It does quickly move to the more recent history, however (I think the first 30 pages discuss Ireland prior to the English conquest, and the next 30 the period prior to the Tudor re-establishment of English hegemony, and then about 450 pages or so of more contemporary Irish history, up through the present day).
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
