Now that the year is over and I've finished all the books I'm going to. In no particular order, the three best books I read this year were:

- Midnight's Children (by Salman Rushdie)

- The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 (by Shelby Foote)

- I can't pick a favorite so I'll just note that I've been reading The Dresden Files, and I'm through the first eight volumes so far. It's not a perfect series — there are cracks (or at least things that bother me) in the writing, and Butcher tends to have Harry over-explain his rationale for decisions he makes, in my opinion — but the series is overall just a lot of fun, with good characters and strong storytelling, and I'm looking forward to catching up with it in 2013. I liked Grave Peril, Summer Knight, Dead Beat, and Proven Guilty the best so far.
