The "porno novel spun off from Twilight fanfiction" genre seems oddly large based on my cursory look around Easons a few weeks back.
In this case, the genre I'm referring to is Romance. That's how it was described in the radio report.
Also, they sell for exactly the same reason as Lad's Mags and Mills & Boon novels sell- people like smut. And of course 50 Shades doesn't have the half-naked people that typically appear on the covers of the aforementioned works so there is no fear about being caught reading it on a train or a coffee shop. Ingenious really.
Mills & Boon must be a UK or European thing. I don't know the reference, but I'm pretty sure I know what you mean by context. If I'm right, then, in this particular case, women like smut--not people. Generally, smut without pictures appeals to women far more than it does men.
Several people I know mentioned they've read the Twilight books. Not a single one was male.
So, being the most manly of men myself ( ), I see the phenomenon and say, "Whatever."
