I heard a BBC radio report about "50 Shades of Gray" yesterday. Now that quickpoll from a few days ago makes sense. I hadn't heard of the book before.
The whole genre doesn't interest me and the specific subject matter much less so. I don't get why it would sell so much.
The "porno novel spun off from Twilight fanfiction" genre seems oddly large based on my cursory look around Easons a few weeks back.
Also, they sell for exactly the same reason as Lad's Mags and Mills & Boon novels sell- people like smut. And of course 50 Shades doesn't have the half-naked people that typically appear on the covers of the aforementioned works so there is no fear about being caught reading it on a train or a coffee shop. Ingenious really.
