I'm more wondering whether to read the Esslemonts at all.

You could read this one as a break from the Esslemonts, especially if you plan to read all three of them straight through (Esslemont's newest book, BLOOD AND BONE, is out in just a few weeks, in November).
So far I can't say any of them really wowed me - Crippled God reignited my Erikson enthusiasm to some extent, but I'm not sure the same applies for ICE.
There's some interesting major backstory revelations in FORGE OF DARKNESS which could throw some interesting light on the current-day MALAZAN books as well.
So your review made it seem, yes...

I won't be reading this particular book for 1-2 more weeks, but...
