I have found that overview books on religion are next to useless. The far better thing to do would be to read books about each individual religion, which gives you a better sense of the ideas contained therein.
For example, I highly recommend Reginald Ray's Indestructible Truth, which is an introduction to Buddhism generally, and Tibetan Buddhism in particular.
