I'd put Fire ahead of Nest too, but Nest is plenty gripping.
Purely in terms of plot, I actually found the first book the best one, the detective story is just better than the conspiracy story. If I prefer the second one on the whole, it's because it has more Salander and less Blomkvist.
So, I've started reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

it does take a good 100 pages to get into everything... there's a lot of development.
