Seriously, I am not averse to popular writers as long as someone doesn't ascribe to them some sort of value they don't have. With Druon I think I was expecting too much. With May I am looking for Orientalist condescension and adventure writing, no more. It's more that Germans love him, he's been translated widely, and as a "cultural" phenomenon I'd like to read his six-part "Oriental Series". I doubt I'd like his American Indian novels, given that they're so inaccurate and I live in the US, but his Orientalist novels...well, sure, I'll go along for the ride as he explains the life of the savage Mussulman heathens.

Your reference to the Führer is reminding me of the deranged man sitting on the train close to me just today, who was going on a long rant about how much he hated France (in French, I should add - not sure what his nationality was, though he was of African origin in any case), and at one point was talking about how the Führer had been right. I never did quite catch what about, exactly, but I suppose he meant invading France.

Anyhow - I've read very little of "Kara ben Nemsi", no idea what they are like really. If they're anything like the "Winnetou" series, the accuracy is actually fairly impressive for someone who's never been to the places he writes about, but there might indeed be some ideological issues. May is terrible about the "noble savage" idea - most of his American Indians are either very noble or misled by evil Europeans.

He also has a series of books set somewhere between Napoleon and the Franco-Prussian War that I recall liking, but then again I must've been 13 or so when I read them, so who knows. :P

Not even if you stack them in really neat piles? You need to get your C.D.O. checked. *NM* - 17/07/2012 08:07:42 PM 320 Views
