I didn't mean that to sound as ignorant as it obviously came across. In no way did intend that to be advocating piracy.

What I was getting at is that in the digital realm an ebook effectively becomes an infinite reproducible resource, and as such supply infinitely outstrips demand. That means the ebook becomes effectively valueless as a commodity.

I think I should refrain from posting when lacking in sleep in the future.


Obviously a specific ebook in that case can be copied forever. But if this happens in a way that reduces an author's income below a certain amount, then the author will have to give up full-time writing and take on a part-time or even a full-time job. This reduces the amount of time he or she has to write significantly, making the wait between volumes much longer than normal. Of course, if the sales drop too much, than the author might just have to give up altogether, causing the 'resource' of books to dry up at the source.
