As with any piece of creative work, it's appreciation is subjective. And there's always the person who will make themselves dislike something just because "everyone else" likes it.
I've not read your two examples, so I can't comment on them. It seems to me that any fan of fantasy, in general, at least respects LOTR for its originality, even if they don't particularly "like" it.
