I think you would be still be hard pressed to find a fantasy work more widely admired among fantasy fans than Lord of the Rings. I think the vast majority of people who dislike the elements of romanticism and sexism that are portrayed in the story are still capable of appreciating it as a historical work.
Harry Potter, I suppose, surpasses it in popularity.
