I like The Fionavar Tapestry, but I don't expect everybody does.

The theme of this evening's discussion is whether there's any book that all fantasy enthusiasts agree is good. Current contenders are GGK's The Fionavar Tapestry and Feist's Magician. Do you think these are in the running? Can you suggest anything else?
It's beautiful, but, you know, very Tolkien-clone high fantasy. Even its detractors would have to admit that there are good parts - Paul on the tree for starters - but they might not like the books as a whole. I don't know, maybe it'll turn out there are no detractors... but it'd surprise me.
It's been too long since I read Magician, I liked it at the time but I'm a lot pickier about fantasy now, I think.
Not sure I have other suggestions that would work... perhaps something not too pretentious yet fun like, say, The Lies of Locke Lamora? Or some of Pratchett's better efforts? I'm inclined to say that every fantasy that takes itself too seriously will have its detractors as well as its vehement defenders.
Is there a universally liked fantasy book?

That surprises me. I would think you'd have enjoyed LIONS or TIGANA. *NM*

Hm. I think it'd be hard to hate David Eddings' The Belgariad

That only counts for those who have nostalgic feelings for it, I'm afraid. *NM*

Yes, trying to read it for the first time aged 19 wasn't an enjoyable experience.

More like having your love for it curdle into hate after reading the Mallorean, Elenium & Tamuli

Ha, at least in Mallorean it was a plot point (albeit a lame one)

I love Tigana, but yeah, Wibble's not the only one who doesn't.
