Some say it starts out slowly, even though I never felt that way, but the series is overall pretty much what you described.
Read all of this except the second half of the last book and it is really good. If you like it you should consider branching out into shadowlands more sci-fi but still very very good. Oh those that have been suggested so far I would rank him the highest...Feist always seemed a little bit to much like Shanarra for me (which if you haven't read those you might like them but they are pretty generic)
