I can think of some Isaac Send a noteboard - 01/04/2012 10:13:18 PM
I'm sorta well read in epic fantasy, but I've missed a lot of debuts in the last few years.

Anyway, I'm looking for books that are similar to Wheel of Time and Name of the Wind. Some books I know to be similar are Runelords, Way of Kings, Mistworld, and Dune (but looking for fantasy here).

The most obvious that come to mind would be Lord of the Rings, and for that matter a lot of the Expanded Universe books on things like D&D or Star Wars, while hardly the pinnacle of literary talent, tend to have a lot of the elements you've mentioned. You mention Dune for instance but it's hardly full of humor, so I'm assuming your conditions are fairly flexible.

A couple classics that come to mind would be Roger Zelazny's Amber Chronicles - never met anyone who read them and didn't like them and its one of the few things I recommend to multiple people since I don't make suggestions often and those usually are pretty tailored to the person - and Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern. Terry Pratchett's Discworld, though I usually advise people start off around ten books in with 'Men at Arms' or 'Reaper Man', if you enjoy parody with purpose. Another classic, David Eddings' Belgariad, or his Elenium. More modern, and set modern, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.
