Never Let Me Go

Great book - can't argue. Not Ishiguro's best, but he's so good that that still doesn't mean it isn't brilliant.

Yup, good book.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Not sure I've heard of this...

Some parts were really good, but I had trouble feeling any sort of attachment to half of the characters - Oscar Wao included (and possibly the worst, for me).

Atonement

Meh. I mean, it's a good book and I liked it. But not top ten of the decade material, or even top hundred imho.

I actually love that book. I remember being very impressed by the metaphors and visual descriptions. And the end definitely got me.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Not sure I'd pick this one over HBP, either, although I can see why he did, I think... if the list was specifically for children's books or YA books, it'd be a shoe-in, as it is it's a bit surprising again.

The description in another part of the article mentions the anger Harry shows, and then the death at the end. I'm guessing it was chosen as the first "this is serious" book of the series.

Books I really would've included (that I've actually read): Zadie Smith's White Teeth, Byatt's Children's Book, and no doubt others I'm not thinking of.

I suppose I should read those. :P
