So Vladimir Putin wants a canon of 100 Russian books for all Russians to be required to read Larry Send a noteboard - 26/01/2012 01:21:44 PM
Leaving aside the motives behind this, what books should be considered for any such proposed "canon"?

Ten that would be no-brainers for me would be:

Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov; The Idiot; Crime and Punishment

Tolstoy, War and Peace; Anna Karenina; The Death of Ivan Ilych

Turgenev, Fathers and Sons

Gogol, Dead Souls; a full collection of his short stories

Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago

What other titles should be added? (I can think of another dozen or so, but these are the most immediate ones that came to mind).
