i agree, it's quintessential calvino... the baron in the trees is another favorite of mine. i have read all of his books, i think if on a winter's night a traveller is one of the most hypnotizing texts... even if it gets a bit disjointed between the sections. i think the most coherent story of his was the path to the nest of spiders. they are all fascinating, though.
