I'm trying to get my mother to either read The Crimson Petal and the White or watch the mini-series I just got on DVD (with Romola Garai as Sugar) - but your comments are making me hesitate a bit, especially since she once started it and commented on the sex as well. I found the book incredible, with the explicit sex only a matter of course considering it was about a prostitute, but I guess people more sensitive to that might see it differently... and the mini-series is faithful enough to the book that it's comparable there.

I'm very prudish. I knew it was about a prostitute, but I didn't expect Faber to be that bald about it. I should stop expecting authors to be the same in all books.

I really need to get around to Alice in Wonderland, besides a few other titles in your list that I'll bump up some on my mental list (The Dervish House, The Anubis Gate, Ragnarok, Barchester Towers). Shame that you didn't like Sons and Lovers so much, I loved that one as well. You probably shouldn't read The Rainbow, then, if you haven't yet. :P

Yeah, I think DH Lawrence and I are no longer friends. :P
