I should probably answer my own questions... Rebekah Send a noteboard - 01/01/2012 02:21:41 PM
I'm not going to ask a number, just tell us which books you most enjoyed and why. They can be new releases, classics, whatever you've read and loved.

Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. It surprised me with how lovely it was. I'd never heard of it.

Room by Emma Donaghue. A very clever concept done very well. The best thing was how she offset the horror of the story by telling it with a 5-year-old's words.

Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. I don't normally enjoy graphic novels, but Satrapi's style fit seamlessly with her storytelling.

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell. I love this man's work. This book was beautifully written, and it was great to read a part of history that I didn't know anything about.

The Temeraire novels by Naomi Novik. Charming, with cool dragons. They're instantly on my list of Must Own and Reread.

And, to make it more interesting, did you read anything you really didn't enjoy? Did you finish reading it, if so? What was so "bad" about it?

Several. But the one I hated most was Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. It was disappointing on several levels. I tend to love McEwan's books, so it was sad not to enjoy this one. The characters were horrible people, and the whole situation seemed so unrealistic that I just didn't want to read it. I took a break for about 2 months and then forced myself to see if he turned it around. He didn't.
