I am having trouble thinking of a non-violent Kay novel.

I haven't read the SARANTIUM books, but all the others I remember reading--FIONAVAR, TIGANA, AL-RASSAN, YSABEL, and UNDER HEAVEN--have a fair amount of violence. Now, it's something that isn't treated casually, which I think is one of Kay's many positive attributes as a writer, but it's fairly intense when it does appear.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."

Fantasy is really just one of three things when you break it down.

I didn't say it's the acceptable choice. It is the best way, however, to get a definitive resolution

There are lots of good non-violent fantasy novels.
