UT is divided into four parts. The first three correspond to the three Ages of Middle-earth's history, the last one is a collection of thematic background essays. THE SILMARILLION is needed to fully understand Part 1 of the book and THE CHILDREN OF HURIN.
THE CHILDREN OF HURIN is a slightly more polished version of the story that makes up the bulk of Part 1 of UT.
The rest of UT more directly ties in with LotR and THE HOBBIT, and doesn't really need an understanding of THE SILMARILLION.
