The ruins have more personality than most of the characters! For that matter, I know more about Aragorn's genealogy than I do Aragorn as a person.
And that's a problem.
It isn't for me. I think that the way Tolkien wrote it, these characters fit perfectly into the history that was prepared for them. It isn't so much a story about the people. It's about showing that there ARE people involved in each step of the epic. Real people, and love, bonds, mistakes, etc. So, anyway. I don't care if others don't agree
, but I have no issue with the way he wrote this all as a whole.
