The interesting part is that while I am reading the book the characters are there in my mind with well defined features but after, if I try to bring up a face I can't formulate it. This makes me think that I never actually picture the characters thoroughly enough which kinda scares me. That would mean I am not a quality reader.
I also do rely on real-life or cover art a lot with the characters. If a character reminds me of someone then I can't help imagine that person in the character's place. And actually for American Gods I was picturing the main character as Neil Gaiman from his author picture on the back because I was associating that picture with the book. The human mind is a fascinating place.
Another interesting point about picturing characters is that whenever I reread something I picture the characters differently every time. I think that may be a bad thing because I may be entirely ignoring the author's description and just picturing what I want to picture making me, again, a bad reader.
So no, it isn't just you that has that trouble but that doesn't mean you shouldn't worry about your brain.
